Writing
emmy has a background in academia, with 11 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of public health and psychology (published under their previous legal name, available upon request). Their publishing journey in creative writing is a more recent endeavour. They are currently focused on developing a body of short works of slice-of-life literary fiction with a touch of the speculative that probe traditional notions of affection through a queer lens and are laced with emmy’s constant yearning for their home on the rural east coast of Canada. Short fiction consultant Anne Elliott has said that emmy’s work gave them Alice Munro vibes, and the adjudication committee of The New Quarterly described it as reminiscent of a Sally Rooney book.

4 AM
emmy’s debut short story, published in Issue 171 (Summer 2024) of The New Quarterly. 4 AM indulges emmy’s love for the province where they grew up, Newfoundland, and explores the theme of misplaced platonic love.
Ticky Tacky
This story juxtaposes memories of a whimsical but isolated childhood and first brushes with love with snapshots of an equally isolated adult life of fulfilling expectation despite an intangible longing. It was shortlisted for the Freefall Annual Prose and Poetry Contest 2024.

Across the Waters
emmy’s creative non-fiction debut will be published in Book*hug Press’ The Deep End: Reflections on Swimming, a forthcoming anthology edited by andrea bennett and Lindsay Zier-Vogel. As a Newfoundlander who lives a landlocked life, this piece excavates the complex role that emmy’s connection to water in its various forms has played in the formation of their identity.
